Getting There And Around
Getting To Sibiu
Sibiu is located in central Romania and can be reached by air, by car, by train, and by bus.
- By air: Sibiu can be reached by air via Sibiu International Airport, which is located only 3 kilometers west of the city.
- By car: Driving is probably the best way to reach Sibiu as this allows you to drive through the beautiful Carpathian Mountains and see more of the beautiful historic region of Transylvania. Sibiu is a 280 kilometer drive away from the capital Bucharest, 175 kilometers from the second-largest city Cluj-Napoca, and 147 kilometers from the historic city of Brașov. Car rental is available at all airports and in most cities in Romania. Be aware though, that paid parking is applicable in most central areas of the city.
- By train: Sibiu is also well-connected to other cities in Romania and by train via Sibiu Train Station, which is only a short walk from the historic old town.
- By bus: There are also many bus connections between Sibiu and nearby towns and to cities around Romania and abroad. There are multiple intercity bus stations and many different private bus companies operating these lines, so it’s best to check which route best suits your travel plans.
- By private transfer: To ensure the availability of a ride from the airport or train station and skip the taxi queue you can also prebook a private transfer to your hotel or other destination.
Getting Around In Sibiu
Sibiu is a medium-sized city with several options for getting around. Most touristic sights are at a walkable distance, but there is also a public transport system, you can get a private ride with a taxi or rent a bycicle or e-scooter.
- By foot: By far the best way to explore Sibiu is simply by foot. Most of the interesting touristic sights are in close proximity of each other within the historic old town. It’s also a blessing to walk around here as there are several car-free streets and squares.
- By bus: Sibiu has an extensive bus network to get around the city and into the suburbs, including links to the airport, train station, and long-distance bus stations. Bus tickets have a flat fare of 3 lei and are valid for 60 minutes in all buses across the city. There are several ways to purchase them. The easiest way for visitors is to simply use the contactless payment machines within the bus as you just have to put your bank card in front of the machine until it validates the payment and that’s it. If you want to buy a second ticket with the same card, you have to touch the “+” sign before you can validate your card again for the second ticket. You can also prepurchase single tickets and reloadable cards from the vending machines available at some bus stops. In that case you need to validate the ticket each time you enter a bus. You can also download the mobile app called SibiuBus to buy tickets and to see live bus information. However, you can also see live departure information for individual bus stops on Google Maps. More information about the bus routes and schedules can also be found on the official website of Tursib.
- By taxi and ridesharing: Taxis are also a relatively cheap and convenient alternative to get around in the city and ridesharing app Bolt is also available in Sibiu. Be aware though, that there can be delays during traffic hours.
- By bycicle: Another great way to explore the city is by picking up a bycicle from one of the many bike rental stations across the city. In order to rent a bike you need to download the Sibiu BikeCity app on your phone, create an account, and add a payment method. More information can be found on the official website of Sibiu BikeCity.
- By electric scooter: E-scooters are also a fun way to get around and both Lime and Bolt currently offer them in Sibiu.
