The Sibiu City Hall (Primăria Municipiului Sibiu) is the municipal headquarters of Sibiu, housed in an imposing early-20th-century building on the Large Square. Completed in 1906 for the Land Credit Bank, it became City Hall a century later and now continues a much older tradition of municipal administration in the historic center.
The present building replaced several older houses on this side of the square and was designed as a prestigious headquarters for the Land Credit Bank (Bodenkreditanstalt). Its architecture combines an eclectic composition with rich Jugendstil details, including pilasters, garlands, masks and decorative window surrounds. The building stretches between the Large Square, Small Square and Samuel von Brukenthal Street, with a U-shaped plan arranged around an internal courtyard. Inside, a monumental staircase rises through the main hall beneath polychrome decoration and a stained-glass window in the Art Nouveau style.
The bank remained here through the early 20th century, while the ground floor also accommodated shops and, from 1937, a bus station with a waiting room and ticket office. During World War II, the cellar was adapted as an air-raid shelter. After the war, the building passed into state ownership and was used by several public institutions, later serving for many years as the headquarters of the Romanian Savings Bank.
Sibiu’s municipal government had meanwhile followed a much longer route through the city center. Its earliest known town hall stood beside the Council Tower on the Small Square, before the administration moved during the late 15th century to a house donated by Thomas Gulden near Huet Square. In the mid-16th century, the magistrate transferred to Altemberger House, which remained the city’s principal administrative headquarters for around four centuries. After 1947, the municipality moved to the Former Sibiu Finance Palace on Bulevardul Victoriei, where the City Hall remained until the beginning of the 21st century.
The next move came in 2006, when the former Land Credit Bank building was renovated and adapted as the new City Hall. The attic was converted into offices, an elevator was installed and the internal courtyard was covered to create a public waiting area. With that relocation, Sibiu’s municipal headquarters returned to the Large Square, bringing the city administration back into the heart of the historic center.
