The Former Sibiu Finance Palace (Fostul Palat de Finanțe din Sibiu) is a large historic administrative building on Bulevardul Victoriei in Sibiu, now used by several municipal services.
The building has an unusually long institutional history that dates back to 1808, when Sibiu’s municipal authorities completed a brewery here at a time when the city was still directly involved in brewing. As private breweries became increasingly competitive, the municipal operation declined, and in 1851 the Finance Office began renting the property. It later purchased the former brewery and adapted it for administrative use, with substantial alterations toward the end of the 19th century giving the building much of its present appearance. At this time, the building became known as Sibiu’s Finance Palace.
That administrative role lasted into the early 20th century, before the building took on a very different function after World War I. From 1921 to 1947 it housed the Dacia Traiană Institute of Graphic Arts, an important Romanian printing house, after which the communist authorities returned the property to public administration. Sibiu’s municipal government moved here from the old city hall in the Altemberger House, and the former Finance Palace became the city’s principal municipal headquarters.
The building remained the Sibiu City Hall after 1989 and continued in that role until the main municipal administration moved to the historic center in 2006. It is still used by the municipality today, housing several public services including civil registration, population records and social assistance.
