The Saint Mary Evangelical Church (Biserica Evanghelică Sfânta Maria), also known as the Valley Church (Biserica din Vale), is a historic Lutheran church in the center of Cisnădioara, Sibiu County. The present Baroque church was completed in 1764 on the site of an older medieval parish church, distinguishing it from the much earlier Saint Michael church on the hill above the village.
The medieval church was probably Romanesque in origin and was later rebuilt in the Gothic style. When the present church replaced it in the 18th century, the older western tower was retained and incorporated into the new building. Archaeological and architectural research has also identified surviving fragments of the earlier structure within and around the present church.
The interior preserves an unusually varied collection of older furnishings. Eight painted panels depicting saints survive in the wooden galleries and may once have formed part of a medieval polyptych. Other furnishings include richly painted pews from the 17th and 18th centuries and a Baroque altar whose central scene depicts the Crucifixion.
Another important feature is the historic pipe organ, built in 1724 and later restored several times. It predates the present church and was reused after the Baroque rebuilding, making it one of the oldest surviving playable organs in Transylvania.
Together, the retained medieval tower, Baroque church and older furnishings preserve several layers of Cisnădioara’s religious history within one building. The churchyard also contains historic gravestones, a well and a memorial to local soldiers who died in the First World War.
