The Equestrian Statue of Michael the Brave (Statuia Ecvestră a lui Mihai Viteazul) is a modern public monument in Piața Revoluției in the center of Cisnădie. Unveiled in 2018, it was created by sculptor Darie Dup to mark the centenary of the Great Union of Romania.
The monument was commissioned by the Cisnădie municipality through a public design competition launched earlier that year. Dup’s proposal was selected from five entries, and the final bronze sculpture was cast in Arad before being installed in front of the Town Hall and officially unveiled on November 13, 2018.
The monument rises to around six meters including its pedestal. Michael the Brave is represented on horseback in a commanding pose with one arm raised, reflecting his place in Romanian national memory as the ruler who briefly brought Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldavia under his authority in 1600.
Its placement in Cisnădie was specifically tied to the 2018 centenary commemorations, linking Michael’s short-lived union of the three principalities with the later Great Union of 1918.
