The Church on the Hill (Biserica din Deal), also called the Church of Saint Nicholas, is an Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Sighișoara. It is the third largest church in Transylvania and with its size and location on top of a 429-meter-high hill, the structure dominates the cityscape and can be seen from all directions.
The church was built between 1429 and 1488 in the Romanesque and Gothic styles but is characterized by simplicity on the outside. During the Hungarian siege in 1704, the roof and belfry were burned and the big bells collapsed. In 1838 the church was also damaged by an earthquake, which caused the vault above the choir to collapse. Hence after the initial building faces the Church on the Hill has undergone several restorations which led to its current design.
The Church on the Hill is the only church in Transylvania with an ancient crypt inside. The crypt contains a total of sixty tombs which are located underneath the walls of the choir. During a renovation in 1934 old fresco paintings were descovered underneath a layer of paint. The paintings are thought to date back to the late 15th century.
