The Ropemakers’ Tower (Turnul Frânghierilor) is one of the nine remaining defense towers of the historic citadel of Sighișoara.
The tower dates back to the first construction of the city walls and was destroyed during the Tatar invasion in 1241. The tower was rebuilt in the 14th century and another restoration took place in the 16th century. It is one of the few towers that were not damaged during the fire of 1676.
The Ropemakers’ Tower is now used as a guard house for the cemetery of the Church on the Hill, making it the only inhabited tower. The loopholes in the basement of the tower show how high the ancient defense walls once were.
