The Scholars’ Stairs (Scara Școlarilor) form a historic covered stairway in the old town of Sighișoara.
The stairs were built in 1642 to connect the lower and upper parts of the citadel of Sighișoara. During the winter, snow could make it difficult to reach the school and the church on the hill so a wooden cover was placed over the stairway for easier access. Originally there were 300 steps, of which only 176 remain today. The tunnel has become a popular tourist attraction as climbing the Scholars’ Stairs has a bit of a magical feeling.
