The Black Eagle Palace (Palatul Vulturul Negru) is a historical building and a cultural monument on the corner of Independence Street and Union Square in the historic center of Oradea, Bihor County. It is a multifunctional building with three separate bodies connected by a glass-covered passage that has housed a variety of institutions and businesses over time. The building is considered the most spectacular secession-style architectural masterpiece of Oradea.
On the location of the Black Eagle Palace stood another one-story building called the Eagle Inn, which was built in 1714. Most of the city’s major events including government meetings, balls, and theater shows were held here. In 1807, the old building was extended with another floor, and in 1835 another extension took place to accommodate a hotel in the building.
As part of a new urban development vision for the city, the City Hall organized a competition for the construction of the new Eagle Hotel in 1903. The first prize was won by the architects Marcell Komor and DezsÅ‘ Jakab, who designed multiple other buildings in Oradea and came up with an ambitious design called “Champagne”. The execution was, however, deemed too expensive, so the project was abandoned.
In 1906, the entrepreneurs Kurländer Ede and Adorján Emil decided to buy the existing complex with their own money and hired the engineer Ferenc Sztarill to realize the construction of the new Black Eagle Palace. The construction started in 1907 and was finished at the end of 1908.
The building has a secession style and consists of two unequal bodies facing Union Square. The passage was inspired by the famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan and has a Y-shape connecting three streets. In the center of the passage, there is a large stained glass window depicting an eagle flying over a colorful landscape, which was made in the glass workshop of Neumann K. The building particularly stands out for its level of detail and many ornaments and other decorations on walls, ceilings, windows, doors, columns, and other parts.
Apart from the hotel, the building housed the Crown Cafe on the corner near the entrance and there were 35 spaces for shops along the passageway. The Hungarian Bank was located on the first floor below the tower on Union Square. Over time, the complex has also housed several entertainment institutions, including a casino, a theater, and a cinema.
Nowadays, the Black Eagle Palace is a centerpiece of Oradea’s social life with several lively bars and restaurants.
