Bihor County is one of the 41 counties (județe) of Romania. It is located in the North-West development region and it is the main county of the historical region of Crișana. Bihor borders Hungary and the other Romanian counties of Satu Mare, Sălaj, Cluj, Alba, and Arad. Oradea is the largest city and capital of Bihor County.
Weather & Climate
Bihor County features a dramatic landscape, transitioning from the flat, agricultural expanse of the Crișana Plains in the west to the rugged, limestone-rich massifs of the Apuseni Mountains in the east. This significant vertical variation creates a layered continental climate, where warm, low-lying basins sit just a short distance from invigorating, high-altitude alpine corridors.
In the summer, the Crișana plains are warm and sun-drenched, with temperatures typically ranging from 28°C to 31°C, while the higher mountain altitudes offer a refreshing, temperate escape of 17°C to 21°C. Transition seasons are consistently mild and pleasant throughout the county, with average temperatures of 11°C to 19°C, providing ideal windows for visiting both urban thermal resorts and remote mountain trails.
Regional contrasts are most evident in winter: while the central urban areas near Oradea remain relatively cool, hovering around -1°C to 2°C, the eastern Apuseni peaks experience significant snowfall and sustained sub-zero temperatures. Visitors should prepare for deep winter conditions when heading toward mountain resorts or karst cave systems; during warmer months, the diverse terrain is best navigated with layers, as the climate can shift rapidly between the sun-warmed valleys and the cooling mountain heights.
