The Saint Ladislaus Church (Biserica Sfântul Ladislau) is a Roman Catholic church on Union Square, on the south bank of the Crișul Repede in Oradea, Bihor County,
The church was constructed between 1717 and 1734 at the initiative of Bishop Imre Csáky (1702-1732) and finished by Bishop János Okolicsányi (1734-1736). However, Bishop Miklós Csáky (1737-1747) wasn’t fully satisfied with it and commissioned some modifications which were finished in 1741. At this time the tower was supposed to be built as well, but due to the death of the architect, this didn’t happen.
The church was consecrated in 1756 and served as the Episcopal Cathedral until 1780 when the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Oradea was inaugurated. Between 1790 and 1800 the tower was finally added to the church.
In 1836, a large fire broke out nearby, but the church did not catch fire, although many surrounding buildings were destroyed. The church survived another threat when it was planned to be demolished under the communist regime in 1964, but protests prevented this from happening.
The church is named after Saint Ladislaus I, King of Hungary from 1077 to 1095 and founder of the city. The church has a provincial late Baroque style, but its architect is unknown. The fresco paintings on the vault were added by Thury György in 1908 and depict several scenes of the life of King Laudislaus. The main altar dates from 1730 and is the oldest in Oradea.
