The Gate Tower (Turnul de Poartă) is a 14th-century defense tower in the historic center of Sibiu, attached to the former City Hall building that now houses the Altemberger House History Museum.
The tower formed part of Sibiu’s third fortified enclosure and once controlled one of the principal entrances into the Upper Town. Its position connected the city with roads approaching from the west, while the vaulted passage through its base allowed traffic to pass directly beneath the tower. A metal portcullis originally helped secure the entrance, making this much more than a simple opening in the wall.
Its role changed as Sibiu expanded and new gates were added farther out around the Lower Town. The nearby City Hall gradually incorporated the tower into its complex, which helped preserve it when many other medieval gates were later demolished. The structure still retains its compact rectangular form, measuring about 7 by 7 meters at the base, with the vaulted passage remaining the clearest reminder of its original function.
Heavy vehicle traffic eventually caused cracks in the masonry, and the passage was closed in the early 1950s while repairs were carried out. Later road changes altered the surrounding area further, so the tower no longer reads as a city entrance in the way it once did, but its position beside the former City Hall still preserves an important part of the medieval relationship between civic administration and the fortifications.
