The Grand Hotel Traian (Grand Hotel Traian) is a historic hotel on Union Square in central Iași, built between 1879 and 1882 to designs by French engineer Gustave Eiffel. Originally conceived as a new theater, the building was converted into a hotel before completion and became one of the city’s best-known late 19th-century landmarks.
The project was initiated by lawyer and former mayor Scarlat Pastia, who planned to create an elegant new theater on the site of shops he owned near the square. He commissioned Eiffel after being impressed by his bridge at Ungheni, but the unusually ambitious construction costs eventually ruined Pastia and forced him to surrender the property to his creditors. The new owners completed the building as a hotel in 1882, while Pastia was reportedly granted a room and a daily meal there for the rest of his life.
Eiffel’s design combined French Eclectic architecture with an unusually advanced metal structure for its time. The building was constructed around a cast-iron skeleton with iron beams, while the façades were enriched with stucco decoration, a steep trapezoidal roof, medallions depicting the Roman emperor Trajan, and amphora motifs set into the lower level. Its prominent position later became even more striking as Union Square developed in front of it.
The hotel quickly became a setting for major cultural and public events in Iași. In 1884 it hosted the banquet marking the 21st anniversary of the Junimea Literary Society, and the same year Mihai Eminescu, Ion Creangă, and Ion Luca Caragiale attended a commemoration of the Horea, Cloșca, and Crișan uprising. Caragiale presented A Lost Letter during the gathering. In 1896, the hotel also hosted some of the earliest film screenings in Iași, using productions from the Lumière studio.
During the First World War, when Iași served as Romania’s temporary capital, government offices operated from the hotel. Its ground-floor spaces also accommodated cafés, restaurants, shops, and other businesses over the following decades, while the building continued to function as a hotel and remains in that role today.
