The Monument to the Heroes of the War of Independence (Monumentul Eroilor din Războiul de Independență) is a commemorative monument in Constanța, standing on the esplanade in front of the Trade Unions’ House of Culture. Created by sculptor Marius Butunoiu, it was installed here in 1985.
The bronze group depicts a Romanian infantryman advancing into battle beside an officer holding the national flag in one hand and a sword in the other. The pedestal carries the names Plevna, Grivița, Rahova, and Smârdan, recalling major battles and captured positions from the Romanian War of Independence of 1877-1878.
Behind the figures rises a tall column faced in white marble. Two sides carry the inscription 1877-1977, while the others are decorated with dolphins, used here as a symbol of Dobrogea between the Danube and the Black Sea.
