Lake Vidraru (Lacul Vidraru) is a large mountain reservoir in Argeș County, stretching for about 14 kilometers through the valleys north of the Vidraru Dam. Surrounded by the Frunții and Ghițu Mountains, the lake is one of the most scenic sections of the southern Transfăgărășan.
Created when the Argeș River was dammed in the 1960s, the reservoir covers roughly 870 hectares and reaches a maximum depth of about 155 meters. The Capra and Buda rivers also feed into the lake, while its long, irregular shoreline follows a series of narrow mountain valleys and forested slopes.
The Transfăgărășan follows the eastern side of the reservoir for much of its length, with changing views of the water appearing between the trees and across wider bays. Several side roads and tracks also reach quieter sections of the shoreline, where the lake feels much more remote than around the dam itself.
Boat trips and water sports are available on the reservoir, while fishing and camping are also established activities around the lake. Along the western shore, Complex Turistic Cumpăna provides accommodation and food in a quieter part of the reservoir, reached by the local road that follows this side of the lake.
For visitors driving the Transfăgărășan, Lake Vidraru is less a single stopping point than a long stretch of mountain scenery, with the road repeatedly opening onto different views of the reservoir before continuing north toward the higher Făgăraș Mountains.
