Argeș County is one of the 41 counties (județe) of Romania. It is located in the South Muntenia development region and is part of the historical region of Muntenia (Wallachia). Argeș is surrounded by the counties Brașov, Dâmbovița, Teleorman, Olt, Vâlcea, and Sibiu. Pitești is the largest city and capital of Argeș County.
Weather & Climate
Argeș County features a vast, varied landscape, stretching from the rolling southern plains to the soaring, dramatic heights of the Făgăraș Mountains in the north. This extreme vertical range results in a complex, layered continental climate that varies significantly with altitude.
In the southern plains, summers are warm and sun-drenched, with temperatures typically ranging from 28°C to 32°C. In contrast, the high-altitude mountain regions, home to the famous Transfăgărășan highway, provide a crisp, refreshing escape, with summer temperatures averaging a mild 15°C to 20°C. Transition seasons are generally pleasant throughout the county, with average temperatures of 11°C to 19°C.
Regional contrasts peak in winter: while the southern lowlands remain cool, hovering around 0°C to 2°C, the northern alpine corridors experience persistent, heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures often dropping well below 0°C, creating a classic high-mountain winter environment.
