Getting There And Around
Cozia National Park is defined by its dramatic, steep-sided massif rising directly above the Olt River. Its unique geography, ranging from the Olt Valley floor up to the high ridge of Mount Cozia, creates a sharp climate gradient where humid valley air meets much cooler, windier conditions at the summits.
Summer (June-August): The valley base is warm and sun-drenched, with temperatures ranging from 24°C to 28°C. As you ascend the mountain roads or trails, the climate shifts quickly; the higher ridges offer a refreshing relief, usually staying between 16°C and 20°C. It is an excellent season for scenic drives along the Olt, visiting the historic Cozia Monastery, and enjoying forest hikes.
Spring and Autumn: These are periods of steady, mild transition. Spring brings lush greenery and high river levels in April and May, with comfortable daytime highs of 15°C to 20°C. October is the highlight for photographers, as the steep slopes turn vibrant colors; temperatures generally settle between 10°C and 15°C, perfect for exploring the park’s numerous smaller trails.
Winter (December-March): The park sees cold, crisp conditions, with temperatures at lower elevations hovering between -2°C and 4°C. Higher up on the Cozia ridge, conditions are much harsher, with frequent frost and snow. While the main roads along the river remain well-maintained, secondary access roads into the mountain can be treacherous; winter tires and cautious driving are mandatory. The lower park areas remain accessible for quiet winter sightseeing and monastery tours.
