Cluj County is one of the 41 counties (județe) of Romania. It is located in the North-West development region and is part of the historical region of Transylvania. Cluj is surrounded by the counties of Sălaj, Maramureș, Bistrița-Năsăud, Mureș, Alba, and Bihor. Cluj-Napoca is the largest city and capital of Cluj County.
Weather & Climate
Cluj County features a complex and diverse landscape, transitioning from the rolling, verdant hills of the Transylvanian Plateau in the east to the rugged, limestone-rich peaks of the Apuseni Mountains in the west. This vertical variation creates a dynamic continental climate that shifts significantly with elevation, balancing the heat of the central valleys with the bracing air of the mountain passes.
In the summer, the central plateaus and valleys are warm and vibrant, with temperatures typically ranging from 25°C to 28°C, while the higher mountain altitudes offer a cooler, more invigorating range of 16°C to 20°C. Transition seasons are generally pleasant across the county, with average temperatures of 10°C to 18°C, providing ideal conditions for outdoor exploration.
Regional contrasts are most evident in winter: while the central urban areas remain relatively cool, hovering around 0°C to -2°C, the western Apuseni alpine corridors experience persistent snowfall and sub-zero temperatures. Visitors should plan for deep winter conditions when traveling toward high-altitude mountain resorts or remote karst caves. During the warmer months, the rolling plateau landscapes and limestone gorges are best enjoyed with layers to accommodate the crisp, changing mountain air.
