Binder House (Casa Binder) is a 19th-century historic residence immediately outside the western medieval fortifications of Mediaș. Built around 1860 for Austrian colonel Von Spauer, commander of the Mediaș military garrison, the house later passed through several owners before taking its present name from the Binder family.
The building was constructed on a rectangular plan with a basement, ground floor and upper story, taking advantage of the sloping ground beside the old city wall. Its most distinctive feature is the large upper-floor loggia, supported by six tall columns with Corinthian-style capitals and topped by a triangular pediment. The loggia was probably originally open but was later enclosed with glazing.
After von Spauer, the house belonged at different times to the Mediaș Craftsmen’s Association and the Haller family of Sibiu before eventually passing to the Binder family. Its position beside the former promenade and medieval wall places it slightly apart from the denser streets of the historic center, with the building overlooking the park below.
