The Roth-Oberth High School (Liceul Teoretic Roth-Oberth) is a historic secondary school just outside the fortified encloser around the Saint Margaret’s Church in the center of Mediaș. The present building dates from 1909-1912, but the institution behind it grew out of a much older Evangelical school whose documented history reaches back to the beginning of the 17th century.
Education had already become an established part of the Saxon community in Mediaș by that time, and a surviving register records Matheas Schullerus as rector in 1604. The school continued to develop over the following centuries, gradually expanding its curriculum and becoming one of the town’s principal educational institutions. Among the teachers who shaped it was Stephan Ludwig Roth, who joined the staff in 1821 after studying the educational ideas of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi in Switzerland. Roth promoted a broader approach to teaching that included subjects such as music and physical education, before later becoming known far beyond the classroom as a Saxon reformer, pastor and political thinker.
By the beginning of the 20th century, the old school buildings were no longer adequate for the growing institution. A new complex was therefore built between 1909 and 1912 to designs by architect Fritz Baltes of Sighișoara, immediately outside the medieval church enclosure. The two perpendicular wings accommodated classrooms, specialist teaching spaces and the rector’s residence, while scientific equipment and an observatory reflected the increasingly modern curriculum.
Much of the character of the new school was concentrated in its ceremonial spaces. The main hall was decorated with allegorical frescoes, stained-glass windows and a ceiling painted with constellations and the signs of the zodiac, while copies of classical sculptures were displayed along the corridors. Only a few years after the building opened, that same hall became the setting for an important moment in the political history of Transylvania. On January 8, 1919, representatives of the Transylvanian Saxons met there and declared their support for the union of Transylvania with Romania. Later that year, the school was given the name of Stephan Ludwig Roth, honoring the former teacher whose educational work in Mediaș remained part of its identity.
The scientific facilities of the new building also became important during the years when Hermann Oberth taught there between 1925 and 1938. Oberth was a physicist whose theoretical work on rockets and spaceflight helped lay the foundations of modern astronautics, and he continued developing these ideas while living and teaching in Mediaș. The school observatory and its astronomical equipment formed part of the environment in which he worked during this period.
For most of the 20th and early 21st centuries, the institution continued under the name of Stephan Ludwig Roth. Its present Roth-Oberth name was adopted in 2022, when the high school merged with the neighboring Hermann Oberth Middle School. The two schools had previously belonged to the same educational organization before being separated in 1986, bringing their histories together again in the current institution.
