The Mediaș Municipal Museum (Muzeul Municipal Mediaș) is a local history museum housed in part of the former Franciscan Monastery in the historic center of Mediaș. Founded in 1901 and moved to its present location in 1970, the museum preserves collections covering the archaeology, history, traditional culture, art and natural environment of Mediaș and the surrounding Târnava region.
The history and archaeology displays follow the area from prehistory through the medieval and modern periods, with finds ranging from prehistoric pottery and Roman objects to guild records, weapons, seals and other material from the development of Mediaș. A large model based on Giovanni Morando Visconti’s 1699 plan reconstructs the fortified town at a time when its walls, gates and towers were still largely intact.
Other rooms explore traditional life in the Târnava Valley through agricultural tools, shepherding equipment, objects connected with viticulture and textile production, ceramics and regional costume. The museum also maintains collections of art and natural sciences, while temporary exhibitions regularly draw on material that cannot be displayed permanently.
