The Cobblestone Street Gate Tower (Turnul Porții Străzii Pietruite), also known as the Stonemasons’ Tower (Turnul Pietrarilor), is a medieval gate tower on the northern side of the historic center of Mediaș. It guarded one of the three principal entrances into the fortified town and was maintained by the stonemasons’ and masons’ guilds.
A plaque on the tower dates its construction to 1494-1534 and gives the historical German name Steingasse, meaning “Cobblestone Street,” after the street that led to the gate. The tower rises to about 26 meters, with two upper floors above the passage.
The same plaque records that the tower was restored in 1745 after damage suffered during the Kuruc siege of 1705. Its present appearance therefore combines the medieval gate structure with later repairs and alterations.
The interior is used for exhibitions and cultural events, including temporary displays organized by the city.
