Hotel Intim is a historic hotel in the old center of Constanța, built between 1906 and 1909 on the site of the earlier Hotel d’Angleterre. Designed by architect Daniel Renard, who also designed the Constanța Casino, the new building opened in 1909 as Hotel Regina.
The earlier Hotel d’Angleterre had been one of Constanța’s best-known hotels in the late 19th century. In June 1882, Mihai Eminescu stayed there for ten days in an attic room and wrote several letters to Veronica Micle during his visit to the Black Sea coast. That building was later demolished, but the connection with Eminescu is still remembered by a plaque on the present hotel.
Renard gave Hotel Regina an eclectic design with a neoclassical structure and prominent Art Nouveau decoration. The building has a basement, ground floor, two upper floors and an attic, originally containing 21 rooms with private bathrooms. Along the façades, the lower level is more restrained, while the upper floors carry richer decoration around the windows, including floral ornament, shells, garlands and surviving ironwork from the former balconies.
The hotel also became an important social venue during the interwar period. In 1925 it began hosting Cercul Intim, an association that brought together intellectuals and prominent families from Constanța for meetings and social events. After the Second World War the building was requisitioned by Soviet troops and later nationalized. During the communist period it returned to hotel use under the name Intim, taken from the earlier association.
