The Hungarian State Theater Of Cluj (Teatrul Maghiar de Stat Cluj) is a theater in Cluj-Napoca, located next to Central Park Simion Bărnuțiu on the banks of the river Someșul Mic. Performances are in Hungarian, with Romanian and English translations usually available in real-time. The Hungarian Theater Of Cluj shares the building with the Cluj-Napoca Hungarian Opera and with choir, orchestra, and ballet performances.
The Hungarian Theater of Cluj was founded in 1792 as the first Hungarian theater company in Transylvania. The current building was designed by the architects Géza Márkus and Frigyes Spiegel and constructed between 1909 and 1910 on the site of an earlier summer theater from 1821. A reconstruction took place between 1959 and 1961, which gave the building a style blend of art nouveau and socialist realism. In 2007 the theater became a member of the Union of Theaters of Europe.
