The Cluj-Napoca Piarists’ Church (Biserica Piaristă Cluj-Napoca), also known as Jesuit Church or University Church, is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It is located in the center of Cluj-Napoca.
After Jesuit priests started fundraising in 1718, the church was built and completed in 1724, followed by its consecration in 1725 by Bishop Joannes Antalfi. The Cluj-Napoca Piarists’ Church was the first Roman Catholic church built in Transylvania after the Protestant Reformation. It was also the first Baroque-style church in the province and hence served as a prototype for other churches in Transylvania.
When the Jesuits were suppressed by Pope Clement XIV in 1773, the church was transferred to the Piarists by Empress Maria Theresa in 1776. Over the centuries several restoration works took place that gave the church its current appearance.
Cluj-Napoca Piarists’ Church has two 45-meter high clock towers and a single nave which is 45 meters long and 24 meters high, with three chapels on the sides. Underneath the church there is a crypt which has 140 tombs.
