The Shoemakers’ Tower (Turnul Cizmarilor) is one of the nine remaining defense towers of the historic citadel of Sighișoara and is located on the northeastern side of the old city.
It’s unknown when the tower was exactly built, but it was first mentioned in documents from 1522. However, the tower was completely destroyed during the great fire of 1676 as it was loaded with gunpowder. In 1681 a completely new tower was built in the Baroque style with a bastion of artillery, however, the bastion was demolished in 1846.
After World War II the Shoemakers’ Tower was used as a document archive and the windows were enlarged. In 2001 an exterior wooden staircase was added to the façade of the tower. Currently, the tower is used by a local radio station, Radio Son Sighişoara.
