The Saint Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church (Catedrala Romano-Catolică Sfantul Iosif) is one of the famous old churches inside the medieval citadel of Sighișoara. The church is located next to the city wall on the northeastern side, making the church visible from far away.
Construction of the church started during the time of the priest Josef Weiss in 1895 on the site of an earlier medieval church of the Dominican sisters. The consecration took place on October 4, 1896, by the bishop of Transylvania, Franz Lonhart.
The Saint Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church was designed by the Sighișoaran architect brothers Letz in an eclectic style, with predominating neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque elements. The church’s nave has a length of 30 meters, with a semicircular apse, a transept, and a large bell tower.
On March 22, 1983, the church was damaged by a fire after which it underwent an internal restoration and the roof was replaced. The organ was brought from another Saxon church and was built by Karl Einschenk in 1908.
