The Tailors’ Tower (Turnul Croitorilor) is an entrance gate and one of the nine remaining defense towers of the historic citadel of Sighișoara. It is located opposite the Clock Tower, on the northeastern side of the old town, and functioned as the second gateway into the citadel.
The tower has two passageways, which suggests a construction somewhere between the late 12th and 14th centuries. In 1676 the tower was heavily damaged by the great fire. The tower was used to store grain, projectiles, breastplates, and guns, but also a large amount of gunpowder, which caused an explosion that destroyed the upper and northwest parts of the tower. After the fire, the Tailors’ Tower was restored and the north-west corridor was turned into a warehouse and used as such until at least 1935.
