The Dietrich House (Casa Dietrich) is a late-19th-century historic building on Schiller Square in the center of Sibiu. Standing at the corner of Schiller Square and Tipografilor Street, it is best recognized by the bronze bust of Friedrich Schiller set into a niche on its chamfered corner.
The house belonged to Gustav Dietrich, who left the property to a foundation carrying his name. In 1929, the Evangelical Church opened a Christian guesthouse here under the name Christliches Hospiz, and the building became widely known as Dietrich House. By 1939 it was classified as a first-category hotel, but the guesthouse closed after World War II.
Its architecture reflects the historicist tastes of the late 19th century, with rusticated wall surfaces, pilasters, decorative window surrounds and relief ornament on the upper floor. The corner is emphasized by a projecting bay window above the entrance level, framed by fluted pilasters with Corinthian capitals and crowned by a triangular pediment.
The Schiller bust was created in bronze by sculptor Thomas Khuen in 1905 and donated to the city by sausage manufacturer Gustav Nüssbacher. It originally stood in the ASTRA Park before being moved to the niche on Dietrich House in 1937, helping establish the identity of the small square that now bears the poet’s name.
