The Tinsmiths’ Tower (Turnul Zincarilor), also known as the Blacksmiths’ Tower (Turnul Fierarilor), marks the site of a former defense tower on Strada Cetății in Sibiu, directly in front of the historic Thick Tower and present-day Thalia Hall.
The original tower was built during the 16th century as part of Sibiu’s third fortified enclosure and stood on the same defensive line as the other guild towers along Strada Cetății. It survived until 1877, when the tower and adjoining wall were demolished as the old fortifications were gradually removed from this part of the city.
Its lower remains were rediscovered and incorporated into the redevelopment of the Thalia Hall area, where the former tower was given a partial volumetric reconstruction over two levels. Rather than recreating the original structure in detail, the intervention marks its former position and mass while incorporating a covered stairway that descends from Strada Cetății to the lower level beside the Thick Tower.
The result is an unusual combination of archaeological remains and contemporary interpretation, with the surviving masonry still visible beneath the timber-roofed structure and the staircase giving the former tower site a new function within the surrounding fortifications.
