The Dimitrie Ghica Park (Parcul Dimitrie Ghica) is the historic central park of Sinaia, stretching between Bulevardul Carol I and the railway station below Sinaia Monastery. Created in 1881 under the direction of landscape gardener Eder, the park became one of the main public spaces of the growing mountain resort and still forms an important green link between the town center, the monastery and the station.
The park was laid out with broad lawns, winding paths, ornamental planting and mature trees, including chestnuts, beeches and conifers that now give much of the grounds a shaded, established character. Flower beds, fountains and a music pavilion were also part of the design, reinforcing its role as a promenade and social meeting place for visitors to Sinaia during the resort’s rapid development in the late 19th century.
Its surroundings changed considerably in the early 20th century. Hotel Caraiman already stood on the eastern side of the park, while Hotel Palace and the Sinaia Casino were built in 1910-1911 and 1912-1913 respectively. Together, these large historic buildings now frame much of the park and give it a very different atmosphere from an ordinary municipal garden.
Several monuments are scattered along the paths, including busts of Mihai Eminescu, Ion Creangă, Nicolae Bălcescu and Dimitrie Ghica, after whom the park is named. Near one of the fountains stand two cast-iron lion sculptures, while other decorative works and older park furniture add to the historic character of the grounds.
The Museum of the Bucegi Nature Reserve (Muzeul Rezervației Bucegi) is also located inside the park. Opened in 1976, the small natural-history museum presents the flora and fauna of the Bucegi Mountains, including rare and protected species and plants found only in this part of the Carpathians.
Dimitrie Ghica Park remains a pleasant place to stroll or relax in the center of Sinaia, with mature trees, open lawns and the historic resort buildings forming the backdrop. The park also hosts concerts and other events throughout the year, including summer performances and activities during the annual Sinaia Forever festival.
