The George Enescu School (Școala George Enescu) is a distinctive school building on Bulevardul Carol I in central Sinaia. The present building opened in 1961, shortly after the school received the name of Romanian composer George Enescu, and reflects the postwar expansion of education in a town whose schools had previously occupied a series of older villas and adapted buildings.
The school itself had developed through several earlier forms. After the education reforms of 1948, Sinaia’s secondary school became the Mixed Theoretical High School, later changing its name again as the national education system was reorganized. In 1960 it was named after George Enescu, whose long personal and artistic connection with Sinaia made him a particularly fitting patron for the institution.
The new building opened on January 14, 1961 with 16 classrooms, giving the school a purpose-built home on the town’s main boulevard. As student numbers continued to grow, another eight classrooms and a biology laboratory were added in 1966-1967. The building’s broad façades, steep roof and repeated window rhythm give it a more decorative appearance than many schools constructed during the same period, allowing it to sit comfortably among the older villas and civic buildings along Bulevardul Carol I.
The institution later became the George Enescu General School and remained under that name for decades. Since 2018 it has formed part of Mihail Cantacuzino College, while the 1961 building continues to serve an educational role.
