The Schuster House (Casa Schuster) is a historic Baroque house directly beside the Former Piarist School on King Ferdinand I Square in the center of Mediaș, best known as the birthplace and home of Transylvanian Saxon writer and humorist Dutz Schuster.
The present building dates from around 1705, when an older medieval house on the site was rebuilt into the Baroque residence that still faces the square today. Its façade is divided by five pilasters and horizontal cornices, with sculpted faces and vegetal ornament above the upper windows and a semicircular dormer rising from the roofline. At street level, the wrought-iron window grilles preserve another layer of the building’s history, including decorative vegetal and animal motifs and the initials J.S.
That ground floor became home to the Zum Auge Gottes pharmacy in 1784, when Johann Peter Schuster established his business here after working as a pharmacist in Brașov. The pharmacy remained in the building through several generations of proprietors, passing to Michael Schuster after 1825 and later to Gustav Schuster, before finally closing in 1949 under Otto Kremer.
It was into this setting that Gustav Michael Julius Schuster, better known as Dutz Schuster, was born in 1885. Instead of following in the footsteps of his father Gustav, he studied natural sciences before returning to Mediaș as a teacher of natural history and chemistry. Alongside his teaching career, he became known for humorous poetry and prose written in the Transylvanian Saxon dialect, drawing on the language and everyday life of the community around him. He remained an important literary figure in Mediaș until his death in 1968, and a memorial plaque on the façade marks the house where he was born and lived.
