The Golden Grape Inn (Hanul Strugurele de Aur) is a historic inn and hotel complex on King Ferdinand I Square in the center of Mediaș. Known today as Hotel Traube, the present name continues the older identity of the inn, as Traube is the German word for “grape.”
The complex developed through several construction phases, with parts dating from the 18th century and records also mentioning 1800 as a construction year. By the early 20th century it had grown into a large hospitality complex with a hotel, restaurant, café, pub, games rooms, courtyards and a performance hall.
From 1925, the inn was managed by Daniel and Luise Kartmann, who modernized and expanded the business. An additional hotel floor was added in 1929, while the restaurant and performance spaces became popular for concerts, dances, weddings, meetings and other events. The building was also a regular gathering place for merchants and visitors coming to the weekly market.
After the Second World War, the hotel was temporarily used as a hospital during the Red Army occupation, while the restaurant continued operating. The complex was taken over by the communist authorities in 1948, ending the Kartmann family’s management.
The historic complex continues to operate as Hotel Traube, with accommodation, dining and event spaces still occupying the buildings around the main courtyard.
