Victoria Palace (Palatul Victoria) is a government building on Victory Square (Piața Victoriei) in Bucharest, which currently houses the Prime Minister of Romania with his cabinet.
The architect Duiliu Marcu designed the building, and the construction took place from 1937 to 1944. During the 1944 bombing of Bucharest, the building was severely damaged so building works started again and finished in 1952. Until the 1989 Revolution, Victoria Palace was the headquarters of the Foreign Ministry and the Council of Ministers. In 1990 the building became the headquarters of the first post-communist government of Romania and in 2004 the building was listed as a historical monument.
The design of Victoria Palace was based on a classical foundation with modern simplicity. It has an arcade with columns on the main front and two recessed floors on the top of the building. Initially, the front was covered in Carrara marble, similar to the sides with sculptured decorative panels. After the bombing in 1944 the panels were removed and the front was reconstructed with travertine plates instead.
