The Victor Babeș National Research Institute (Institutul Național Victor Babeș) is a research and development institute in the pathology and biomedical sciences field located on Independence Quay in Bucharest.
The institute was founded on 28 April 1887 as the Institute of Bacteriology making it the oldest scientific medical institute in Romania. During the same year, Victor Babeș (1854-1926), who studied in Vienna, joined the institute. In honor of his major contributions to the field of bacteriology, the institute was named after him in 1925. In the Victor Babeş Museum you can learn more about the scientist and his contributions.
The Victor Babeș Institute initially operated in the old palace of the Brâncoveanu family but moved to its current location on Splaiul Independenții in 1899. The building was designed by the Swiss architect Louis Pierre Blanc, who designed multiple other buildings in Bucharest, including the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy and the Palace of the Ministry of Agriculture.
