The Grand Hotel Bucharest is a 5-star hotel and an iconic city landmark on University Square in Bucharest.
The hotel was built as an ensemble with the National Theater of Bucharest on the same square. The building was designed by the lead architect Dinu Hariton with the help of Gheorghe Nădrag, Ion Moscu and Romeo Ștefan Belea and constructed between 1967 and 1970. The hotel opened on 23 May 1971 as the InterContinental Bucharest, and at that time it was the second tallest building in Bucharest, after the House of the Free Press.
The hotel accommodated many foreign journalists and during the 1989 Revolution the balconies were used to report on the protests that were happening on University Square.
In 2022, the name was changed to Grand Hotel Bucharest, following the expiration of the management contract with the Intercontinental Hotels Group. Between 2022 and 2024, a €21 million investment was made to renovate and modernize the hotel.
The Grand Hotel Bucharest has a height of 77 meters with 24 floors and 257 rooms. Although nowadays the building is not even in the top 10 of highest buildings in Bucharest anymore, it’s still the tallest hotel building in the city and the country. The hotel has a bar and restaurant on the ground floor. On the two upper floors of the building are a club lounge, conference rooms, and a health center with a 70-meter-long swimming pool and a fitness center.
