The Emperor Francisc I Monument (Monumentul Împăratului Francisc I) is a memorial ensemble in the Citadel Park in Sibiu, centered on a bust of Emperor Francisc I set into the historic fortification wall.
The monument was created after the emperor visited Sibiu in 1817, at a time when the former military zone along the wall was being transformed into a public promenade. Franz Neuhauser the Younger designed the memorial as a classical niche built into the fortification wall, with the imperial bust raised on a stone pedestal above a dedicatory inscription. The bust itself was made in Vienna in 1828 by sculptor Franz Prohopp, and the completed monument was inaugurated the following year.
The original lead bust remained here until it was removed after Transylvania became part of Romania. It was rediscovered in 2009 and later restored, and is now kept at the Brukenthal National Museum. Because the original was no longer suitable for returning to the outdoor monument, the niche in Citadel Park now contains a replica.
The space in front of the imperial monument also commemorates Colonel Johann von Vecsey, who oversaw the development and enlargement of the public promenade in 1827. A stone stele erected in his honor in 1829 stands opposite the bust, decorated with military motifs above a Latin inscription recording his contribution. The fountain between the two memorials was added in 1981 to a design by architect Dan Frăticiu, creating the arrangement seen here today.
