The Domogled-Valea Cernei National Park (Parcul Național Domogled-Valea Cernei) is a protected area in the south-west of Romania. The park area spans across three counties, Caraș-Severin, Gorj, and Mehedinți, in two historical regions, Banat and Oltenia.
Weather & Climate
Domogled-Valea Cernei National Park is a vast, rugged wilderness stretching along the Cerna River valley, flanked by the steep limestone massifs of the Mehedinți and Godeanu Mountains. Its long, deep valley structure creates a unique microclimate. While the lower reaches near Băile Herculane are Mediterranean-influenced and mild, the higher mountain ridges experience severe, true-alpine conditions.
Summer (June-August): The valley floor is warm and sun-drenched, with temperatures often ranging from 24°C to 29°C. It is the perfect season for enjoying the riverside, exploring the historic spa town, and visiting the thermal springs. At higher elevations, the air cools significantly, offering a refreshing 15°C to 18°C for those venturing toward the high mountain plateaus.
Spring and Autumn: These are long, pleasant seasons. Spring arrives early in the sheltered valley, with temperatures climbing quickly to 18°C by May. October is stunning, as the massive forest slopes turn gold and copper; daytime temperatures usually settle between 12°C and 16°C, providing ideal conditions for photography and scenic valley drives.
Winter (December-March): The valley remains relatively sheltered, with daytime temperatures typically between 0°C and 5°C. However, the high mountain passes and ridge roads are prone to significant snow accumulation and freezing temperatures. While the main access to the spa area remains well-maintained, secondary roads leading deeper into the park require winter tires and are best reserved for short, scenic visits rather than high-altitude transit.
