Suceava County is one of the 41 counties (județe) of Romania. It is located in the North-East development region and is part of the historical regions of Bucovina and Moldavia. Suceava borders Ukraine and the other Romanian counties of Botoșani, Neamț, Harghita, Mureș, Bistrița-Năsăud, and Maramureș. The namesake city of Suceava is the largest city and capital of Suceava County.
Weather & Climate
Suceava County features a diverse and historic landscape, transitioning from the rolling, fertile hills of the Moldavian Plateau in the east to the dense, rugged forests of the Eastern Carpathians in the west. This position in northern Romania creates a classic continental climate that is often tempered by the region’s higher latitude and significant elevation changes.
In the summer, temperatures across the lower rolling hills typically range from 23°C to 27°C, providing warm, comfortable conditions for touring. The mountainous western zones offer a cooler, more refreshing atmosphere with averages of 16°C to 20°C. Transition seasons are generally crisp and mild, with average temperatures of 9°C to 17°C, which are ideal for exploring the region’s iconic monastic sites.
Regional contrasts are most evident in winter: while the eastern plateau areas remain cool, averaging -3°C to 1°C, the western alpine corridors experience persistent, heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures. Visitors should plan for deep winter conditions when traveling toward high-altitude passes or secluded monastic retreats. During the warmer months, the rolling pastoral landscapes and forest trails are best enjoyed with layers to accommodate the crisp, changing mountain air.
