The Motomancea House (Casa Motomancea) is a late-19th-century residence in Tulcea and the former home of mathematics teacher and school director Constantin Motomancea. The compact house stands out for its richly decorated façade, with classical ornament, sculpted window surrounds, and medallions.
Built between 1870 and 1875, the property originally belonged to Iordan Dobre, whose heirs sold it to Constantin Motomancea in 1929. Motomancea was an important figure in Tulcea’s educational life as director of the city’s leading boys’ high school, today Spiru Haret National College. During his tenure, he helped organize the public fundraising campaign that financed the school’s new north wing in 1925-1926.
He lived here until 1950, when the house was nationalized and he was forced to leave. It was subsequently used by the Tulcea Militia and later as a kindergarten, bringing several decades of institutional use to the former residence. The house eventually returned to private ownership and was restored subsequently.
