The Mircea the Elder Monument (Monumentul lui Mircea cel Bătrân) is an equestrian statue in Mircea the Elder Square in central Tulcea, created by sculptor Ion Jalea. It commemorates the Wallachian ruler whose territory expanded into Dobrogea at the end of the 14th century, bringing the region between the Danube and the Black Sea under his authority.
Mircea ruled Wallachia from 1386 to 1418, during a period when Ottoman expansion was rapidly changing the political balance south of the Danube. Around 1388, as the local Dobrogean principality came under increasing Ottoman pressure, he extended his rule across Dobrogea. His later titles referred to his authority over lands reaching to the Black Sea and the fortress of Dârstor, present-day Silistra.
Tulcea first honored Mircea with a monument at the beginning of the 20th century. Erected between 1900 and 1902 in what became known as Piața Mircea, the original bronze statue showed him standing in armor above a tall granite pedestal, with a sword and mace and two sculpted lions at its base. The monument was destroyed during the occupation of Dobrogea in World War I, although its stone pedestal survived.
Rather than reconstructing the original statue, Tulcea eventually commissioned a new monument for the modern civic square. Ion Jalea portrayed Mircea on horseback in bronze, mounted on a broad stone pedestal bearing his name and reign. The statue was unveiled on 1 December 1972 and has remained the central monument of the square ever since.
