The Ropemakers’ Tower (Turnul Funarilor) is one of the surviving defensive towers of the fortified enclosure around the Saint Margaret’s Church in Mediaș. Standing on the northern side of the complex, it was originally assigned to the ropemakers’ guild, which was responsible for maintaining and defending this section of the church fortress.
The tower changed function several times as the military role of the enclosure declined. After the ropemakers’ guild was severely affected by the plague of 1604, responsibility for the tower passed to another guild, and in the 19th century the building was adapted for storing bacon and other provisions for the local Saxon community.
Later, the tower became important for preserving the parish archive. Historical documents, old books and Bibles were kept here, giving the building a second life as a secure storage place long after it had ceased to serve a defensive purpose.
The tower stands beside the house identified as the birthplace of Stephan Ludwig Roth, the 19th-century Saxon pastor, teacher and political reformer. Together, the two buildings form one of the more distinctive corners of the former church enclosure.
