The Capitoline Wolf of Tomis (Lupa Capitolina din Tomis) is a bronze monument in Constanța, placed at the entrance to the historic peninsula in 2004. It is a copy of the famous Capitoline Wolf in Rome, showing the she-wolf suckling the twins Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of the Roman city.
Copies of the Capitoline Wolf can be found in several Romanian cities, where the image became a symbol of Romania’s Roman heritage. In Constanța, the monument has particular relevance because the modern city developed over ancient Tomis, which became part of the Roman Empire in the 1st century BC and remained an important Roman and later Byzantine center on the Black Sea coast.
