The Karl and Michael von Brukenthal House (Casa Karl și Michael Brukenthal) is a historic residence on Avram Iancu Street in the historic center of Sibiu. The building incorporates parts of a 15th-century house, but its present appearance largely dates from the late 18th century, when the Brukenthal family transformed the older property into an aristocratic residence.
The house was rebuilt between 1785 and 1799 for Michael and Karl von Brukenthal, members of the same prominent Transylvanian Saxon family as Baron Samuel von Brukenthal. Rather than replacing the medieval building completely, the reconstruction incorporated older walls and rooms that still survive in the basement, ground floor and part of the upper story. The result was a residence arranged around two interior courtyards, combining the fabric of the earlier house with the more formal Baroque architecture expected of a noble household at the end of the 18th century.
From Avram Iancu Street, the façade is relatively restrained, with horizontal bands across the ground floor and a stone Baroque portal supporting a balcony. Its wrought-iron railing, dated 1799, is decorated with the initials B.B., while the passage beneath leads into the first courtyard. Here, open galleries supported by Doric columns run along two sides, and two symmetrical passages continue toward a smaller second courtyard. The interiors were considerably richer than the street façade suggests: the staircase was decorated with stucco and a sculptural niche, while eight rooms on the upper floor received elaborate Baroque plasterwork. The Brukenthal family coat of arms also survives on the ceiling of a ground-floor room.
The building later lost its residential role and was adapted to institutional use. The Court of Justice occupied it until 1908, when the court moved to Bulevardul Victoriei. An Evangelical boarding school opened here the following year and remained until the 1940s, while shops gradually appeared along the street frontage, including a Singer sewing-machine dealership and a business later used as a butcher’s shop.
