The Potters’ Tower (Turnul Olarilor) is a medieval defense tower on Strada Cetății in Sibiu, forming part of one of the best-preserved stretches of the city’s historic fortifications.
Built during the 15th century and later adapted for firearms, the tower was maintained by Sibiu’s potters’ guild as part of the defensive line around the Upper Town. Its rectangular stone body rises to a broader upper section carried on projecting consoles, while firing openings and defensive slots remain visible around the walls. The steep pyramidal roof gives it a solid, compact profile that stands out clearly along Strada Cetății.
Inside, information panels introduce the potters’ guild and the role of Sibiu’s craft guilds in maintaining the fortifications, while the upper levels provide views over Strada Cetății and the surrounding defensive remains. To reach the tower, visitors enter through the Carpenters’ Tower, which also contains its own exhibition, then continue along the covered wall walk that links the two towers. The passage follows the inside of the medieval curtain wall, passing the brick arcades and firing openings before entering the Potters’ Tower and descending back to Strada Cetății.
