The Ion Heliade Rădulescu Middle School (Școala Gimnazială Ion Heliade Rădulescu) is a secondary school which operates in a historic building next to Kiseleff Park in Bucharest.
The school was built on the grounds of the Mavrogheni Church in 1895, following the plans of the Italian architect Giulio Magni who also designed other buildings in Bucharest and other cities in Romania. The building has a Neo-Romanian design and was inspired by Casa Doina. Glazed ceramic decorative elements and names of great scholars feature on it’s facade.
The school was initially called the Mavrogheni Municipal School (Şcoală Comunală Mavrogheni), but under the communist regime it was changed to General School No. 11 (Şcoală Generală Nr. 11). After the communist era the school was named after the academic, poet, and writer Ion Heliade Rădulescu (1802-1872) who published the magazine The Romanian Courier (Curierul Romanesc) from the printing house located on the church premises.
On University Square there’s also a statue of Ion Heliade Rădulescu.
