Weather & Climate
Spanning the border between Romania and Ukraine, this is the country’s largest natural park, defined by a massive, continuous chain of high ridges and deep, V-shaped valleys. The park’s significant elevation and extensive forest cover create a rugged alpine climate, characterized by long, harsh winters and a rapid, intense transition into a brief, lush summer. This intense topography isolates internal valleys, often resulting in localized weather patterns that differ significantly from the more accessible foothill regions.
Summer (June-August): The high-altitude meadows are crisp and invigorating, with daytime temperatures averaging 15°C to 20°C, while the deeper valleys remain a few degrees warmer. This is the peak season for trekking across the remote ridge lines and visiting traditional wooden mountain stâne (shepherd shelters), as the weather is most stable for high-elevation navigation.
Spring and Autumn: These are seasons of dramatic, fleeting transitions. Spring (May) is late-arriving, with melting snow creating rushing streams and temperatures ranging from 8°C to 14°C. Autumn (September–October) offers the most reliable weather for photography, with clear, cold nights and brilliant fall foliage, as daytime temperatures drop to a crisp 6°C to 12°C.
Winter (December-March): The park experiences a deep, prolonged winter with temperatures regularly plummeting between -12°C and -2°C. Heavy snowpack is standard, creating a pristine but challenging environment. Access to the upper reaches is strictly limited to experienced mountaineers or those equipped for snowshoeing, as primary roads are often restricted by snow and ice.
