The Assumption of the Virgin Mary Church (Biserica Adormirea Maicii Domnului) is an orthodox church on Council Square (Piața Sfatului) in the historic old town of Brașov. The complex consists of a church inside a courtyard and a parish house, facing the square.
Initially, only one chapel was built in 1833, with no access to the street. After fundraising in 1894, the church in its current form and the parish house were built between 1895 and 1896 and consecrated in 1899. The parish house is facing Council Square and provides a corridor to the church that is hidden in the courtyard.
The Assumption of The Virgin Mary Church is built in the neo-Byzantine style with a central dome and bell tower and a length of 26.6 meters and a width of 12.3 meters. It was designed by the architect G. Brus and based on the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Vienna. The iconostasis was painted by Hans Bulhardi in 1898.
Later a neo-Byzantine tower was added to the facade of the parish house facing the square. After the building got severly damaged during an earthquake in 1940, it was rebuilt in 1973. The interior painting dates back to 1937, but several restorations took place since then.
