The County Library George Barițiu (Biblioteca Județeană George Barițiu) is a public library of the city and county of Brașov. Since 1992 it has been named after George Barițiu, who is considered the Romanian press founder in Transylvania.
The library was founded in 1930 in memory of the scholar Dr. Alexandru Bogdan who had died during World War I and left his personal library. The building was designed in the Neo-Romanesque style by the architects Moritz Wagner and Constantin Nanescu and construction took place between 1928 and 1930. In front of the building, you can see a statue of the historian and publicist George Barițiu, who founded the first Romanian newspaper in Transylvania, the “Gazeta de Transilvania”, in 1838.
Over time, the collection of the library has grown to over 600,000 publications and the institution fulfills an important information, cultural, and community resource.
